The most perfectly simple avocado toast recipe. Quick, easy and minimalist to ideally bring out the flavors. Great for breakfast or a healthy snack!
I really contemplated whether I could put this up as a recipe. Because it’s not really much of a ‘recipe’. I mean it’s so simple it’s ridiculous.
But then I thought, hey, not everyone knows about the magic of avocado toast for one thing, and for another thing, not everyone knows the most delicious way to DO avocado toast.
Because there IS a right way to make this, you know.
So – there it is, full justification for doing this recipe on my blog.
How To Make Avocado Toast
So what is the right way to do avocado on toast? It’s simple.
- Take perfectly ripe avocado, slice it in half, scoop out the flesh into a bowl. Mash with a fork. Yes, mash. Sliced avocado on toast just will not do. It’s not the same. This is a crucial factor in the perfect avocado on toast recipe.
- The first crucial factor: Mashed avocado (with a fork)
- The second crucial factor: Sea salt
- The third crucial factor: Ground black pepper
- Fourth crucial factor: Perfectly toasted wholewheat bread. If you can get the wholewheat bread with little seeds all over the top, that’s even better.
Keep It Simple
I like to keep it simple with this recipe. A lot of avocado lovers spice it up by adding sliced tomato, radishes or peppers, or by chopping up fresh herbs to place on top.
These are all things you can try and experimentation is great, but I find that the perfection of this recipe comes through in its simplicity.
Adding too many other flavors takes away from fully enjoying the magical blend of creamy salted avocado and black pepper. Mmmmm!
Marmite or Vegemite
There is one variation to this recipe that works fantastically though. It basically adds more saltiness to it. And more salty with that much creamy works a treat.
You’ll need to be in South Africa or Australia or anywhere that sells products from those countries though, because the added saltiness is from Marmite or Vegemite.
You spread the dry toast with a layer of Marmite or Vegemite first and then add the mashed avocado on top. SO good.
Actually, let me check Amazon, ah there it is! Marmite. It’s the best! Australians swear by Vegemite but as a born and bred South African I must say Marmite is the sure winner! I highly recommend you give that one a try too.
But….I digress.
In this recipe, there’s no Marmite or Vegemite, just delish mashed avocado with sea salt and black pepper and then more black pepper. Because black pepper. Right? Right. You get it!
Served on perfectly toasted wholewheat bread. It doesn’t get better than this!
Have it for breakfast, have it for lunch, have it for a snack anytime of day or night. So creamy, so smooth, so fine!

Hi Alison,
I’m not a vegan, but I am trying to do more fruits and vegetables and less meat. I was looking for different breakfast ideas when I came across your recipe. I just tried avocado toast and it was yummy! I also did a little experiment on my second slice, I drizzled a little honey. This gave it a little sweetness. The combo was delicious. This will be my go to for the mornings thank your for posting your recipe. Quick, easy & yummy ????

Absolutely delicious! And as you mentioned, perfect in its simplicity!! Made it for my Mom and she loved the creaminess of the mashed avocado especially, against the crispness of the toast… yum!

I love to add a bit of Dijon mustard to it, it makes it taste a bit different. Have a try! 🙂

Interesting! Definitely sounds like something to try since we do love dijon mustard! 🙂

If the bread is not toasted, does it taste worse?
P.S. sorry if i made any mistakes my main language is not english.
Alison Andrews says
No it tastes good on bread too, but it’s really good on toast! 🙂

P.S. Marmite is very popular here in Great Britain too.
Alison Andrews says
Oh yes! I lived in the UK for a few years and do remember getting Marmite there, good stuff! 🙂

I’ve always thought a perfectly ripe avocado tastes like egg yolk so I think that’s why we vegans like it so much on our toast. I’m a big fan of cucumber and dill along with hummus on my AT, but this is simple and ready in a jiffy.
Alison Andrews says
Oh yes, hummus and avocado is such a great combo! Thanks for posting! 🙂
Julie says
I have not found anyone who has the same problem where avocado tastes like egg yolk. I’m so glad I’m not the only one. I wonder why? Is it a genetic thing. Cilantro tastes like soap to me. I know that is genetic.

I’m mad about avocado on toast now, it’s the best breakfast! The black pepper and the mashing is the way forward. 🙂
Alison Andrews says
It totally is the way forward! Thanks for posting Emily! 🙂

I don’t even bother with the pepper, I just smear mashed avocado on toast and go. Tastes so good!

Just want to say that it’s soooo refreshing to come across a fellow vegan Alison! I mean an Alison who spells her name correctly ?. If you’re like me, you’ve spent your life w/ everyone in the freakin’ world spelling your name, “Allison” w/o bothering to ask how you spell it. And as anyone can easily find out via 2 mins on Google, using 2 ‘L’s makes it a surname. Like, Mauricio B. Allison, for a hypothetical example. Our name, Alison, is derived from the English first name, Alice. As a 1st name, Alison is spelled w/ 1 ‘L’….just sayin’…I’m so over correcting ppl. Clearly, I see another Alison once in a blue moon or I wldnt be such a freak a/b it! Sorry.
On a relevant note, I’m a vegan of 16yrs (vegetarian since age 8, vegan since 17) who LOVES avocado. Glad I stumbled upon this website. Thanks for posting!
Alison Andrews says
Hi Alison! Hahaha, yes, I have a few names, a first second and third name, which is quite unusual, you must see how the spelling goes wrong on my other name Nicolette! 😉 So awesome you’ve been vegan for 16 years – wow! So glad you found our website too! 🙂
Jennifer says
I know this post is a little old, but I’m just finding it. Nicolette is the French spelling, so it’s not wrong.
Alison Andrews says
Yes, that’s how my name is spelled. 🙂
